NARRATIVE DEVICES IN PAULE MARSHALL’S FICTION

چکیده

Like various other African-American female writers’ fictional works, Paule Marshall’s creative art is anchored in her triple roots (American, African and Barbadian). She thematizes countless sociocultural phenomena narrowly related to ancestral background. Substantively, novel titled Praisesong for the Widow embodies some analeptic narrative devices, which revitalize community’s painful cultural experiences. With a pronounced passion literature, she mingles, on one hand, historical facts with ones, black dialect English, fictionalizes tales, myths, legends, proverbs, songs. Her literary imagination teems noteworthy extratextual values connected African, Caribbean American societies. Those geographical spaces are mainly inhabited by descents. Deported during colonial period, latter’s ancestors take them of their values, such as language, religion, many substantial traditional/cultural practices. The change environment favors implantation that legacy America elsewhere. However, over centuries, those inherited resources undergo impact pertaining host spaces, thus provoking bereavement/alteration or shock whose immediate repercussion known acculturation. longer this sway persists, more Blacks suffer from diverse crises. no instant palliative measures, can enable fight against exotic domination, each beings deems it necessary return ancestors’ benchmarks whole restoration “lost self”.
